Percussion ensemble SISU are celebrating 25 years of existence this year. This supremely adaptable and open minded group have chosen to commemorate their achievement with some challenging and highly textured percussion works by one of the 20thcentury’s most dynamic composers, Iannis Xenakis, as well as a new commission from Lene Grenager, one of Norway’s most important artists.
Iannis Xenakis (1922-2001) was a Greek-French composer, now considered to be one of the most revolutionary agents in post-war music. Scarred by the war and displaced from his homeland, he pursued his interests in architecture, mathematics and classical antiquity by writing dynamic and deeply structured music for conventional and electronic instruments and computers.
Bohor (1962) is a tape based piece based on the Arthurian legends, and features an electronically transformed mouth organ from Laos and the sounds of jewellery from Iraq and India. Here, in an eight-channel interpretation by Xenakis-specialist Reinhold Friedl.
The title of Pléïades (1978), for an extended SISU line-up of six percussionists and conductor, refers to both astronomy and Greek mythology. One of the most important percussion pieces of all times, it features the use of the sixxen, a multi-part metallic home-built instrument devised by the composer specifically to bring piercing sounds to this piece.
Composer and cellist Lene Grenager is a member of SPUNK and Lemur, and a composer whose work spans from the acoustic, the electronic to a very sophisticated approach to noise in music. Her new work for the SISU trio is an homage to Xenakis’ sound world.
