Lars Anders Tomter – Viola

Natasha Barrett – Electronics Bye Bye Butterfly and Syv Cirkler

Bent Sørensen, whose 60thbirthday is celebrated on 18 September by Det Norske Kammerorkester, is heard here in a more intimate chamber setting. Schattenlinie is a trio for clarinet, piano and viola that exemplifies the eerie and flickering quality of the Danish composer’s music, and it contains a concealed ‘shadow line’ which the trio – featuring internationally renowned pianist Leif Ove Andsnes, Björn Nyman and Lars Anders Tomter – will be searching for during the performance.

The concert also includes two pionering electronic works from the 1950’s and 60’s. American composer Pauline Oliveros, who died in late 2016, conceived the Deep Listening Project, which combines music, sound art, creativity and meditational attention. Bye Bye Butterfly is one of her best known tape constructions, including cut-up segments of Puccini’s Madame Butterfly in a structure between composition and improvisation.

Else-Marie Pade’s Syv Sirkler (Seven Circles) – regarded as the first Danish electronic composition – represents the movement of stars in a series of pulses and drones. Pade, who also died in 2016, was inspired by a planetarium at the 1958 Brussels World Fair.

The concert will be followed by a conversation between Bent Sørensen and the performers on their relationship and interpretation of his music.

Produced in collaboration with Notam, EAU og 3DA.
