Kim Myhr’s 2017 release You | Me was highly praised by critics both in Norway and in the international media. Built up from layers of acoustic and electric guitars, electronics, bass and percussion, You | Meis a flow of immersive sound saturated with incidental detail.
For this concert version of the piece, Myhr will perform with the three percussionists who appeared on the record – Australian drummer Tony Buck (The Necks), Hans Hulbækmo (Atomic, Moskus, Broen) and Ingar Zach (SOFA Records), while adding three of Scandinavia’s most inventive guitarists to reproduce the dense and oceanic layers of sound in real time.
‘During the creative process I thought a lot about opposites, and about the sometimes invisible line that separates them,’ comments Myhr. ‘Working with longer forms, you can erase that border and let lush and idyllic material gradually become something more difficult and inaccessible. Inside something, there is always a trace of the other.’
Norwegian experimental groups Parallax and Ensemble neoN have both been in action separately for almost ten years. Three members from each group now come together to perform the world premiere of a new joint work, Flimmer, reflecting new methods of combining composition and improvisation. The idea of collaborating came up in 2015 when Tjøgersen was invited to join Parallax on tour with light/video artist Evelina Dembacke. Together Parallax+neoN will explore how the parallel making of visuals and music may affect the direction of the piece.
