The new cello concerto by Austrian composer Thomas Larcher (b.1963) is played by its dedicatee, cellist Jean-Guihen Queyras. Circularity and complex rhythmic structures are a hallmark of the work, which calls on the orchestra to behave more like a small chamber ensemble.
Now based in Hamburg, Sofia Gubaidulina (b. 1931) is one of the last surviving composers whose deeply spiritual, elegiac music is partly a rection to her experience of life in the pre-glasnost Soviet Union, a time when music was a matter of life and death. Sieben Worte (Seven Words, 1982) is scored for cello, bandoneon and string orchestra and incorporates quotes from German Baroque composer Heinrich Schütz’s The Seven Last Words…, inspired by Christ’s final reported pronouncements from the cross.
They will also perform Ligeti’s Ramifications (1968) and Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart Serenade No. 6 in D major, KV 239 "Serenata notturna".
Produced by The Norwegian Chamber Orchestra.
