In this cultural and political seminar in Tøyen, Ultima will ask how a greater plurality of voices can be heard in Norwegian cultural life, and discuss the challenges and opportunities that migration provides for contemporary music and other art forms.
How can immigration and globalisation enrich Norway’s contemporary music world? How can Norwegian culture deal with the responsibility to reflect the diversity of the population – both in terms of the societal make-up and what is presented on stages, exhibition spaces and other venues?
The Seminar is divided into two parts:
- Speeches and Panel discussion
Thomas Gammeltoft-Hansen (Research Director, Raoul Wallenberg-Institute of Human Rights & Humanitarian Law at the University of Lund) on the global perspective on current migration patterns.
George Lewis (US composer, writer & music professor, Columbia University, New York CXity) on connections between migration and music, and how contemporary music can embrace diversity.
Panel: George Lewis, artist Samina Sahan and artist Hanan Benammar discuss diversity and identity politics, moderated by director at Kunstnernes Hus, Anne Hilde Neset.
- Workshop – Making a Bigger Picture
Moderator: Hilde Maisey, TrAP
Audiences, artists, arts administrators and everybody else interested are invited to participate in an ideas workshop aimed at strengthening cross-art collaborations and developing concrete solutions for increasing diversity in the arts. What should we start doing in Oslo?
In collaboration with TrAp and Oslo World.
