For over a century, French music has tuned in to heightened atmospheres, spectral tones and worship of the nature of sound itself. The Oslo Philharmonic marks its 100th anniversary this season and celebrates at Ultima with a programme of French and Norwegian orchestral works that demonstrate the rich legacy and deep imprint of French 20th century traditions.

Olivier Messiaen called his monumental L’Ascension ‘four meditations for orchestra’ and its orchestral version is loaded with divine ecstasy. Lili Boulanger’s eerie tone poem evokes her own approaching death with overtones of Ravel and Debussy.

Postwar Norwegian composers such as Bjørn Fongaard were similarly obsessed with texture and tone. His anti-nuclear Uran 235 was scandalously labeled ‘unplayable’ and boycotted by Oslo-Filharmonien in the mid-60s, and here the orchestra make amends. Krets is an example of Ragnhild Berstad’s attempts to evoke the ‘expanded moment’ inspired by the French spectralist movement; and the evening is complete with a scintillating new work from conductor Christian Eggen.

Produced by Oslo-Filharmonien.
