Multi-vocalist Ruth Wilhelmine Meyer brings her special commissioned work from this year’s Telemark Festival to Ultima. Taking its starting point in the medieval ballad Haugebonden, which was revived by Norwegian folk singer Agnes Buen Gardås, Meyer creates a haunting setting in which traditional Nordic folk enters the realm of abstract soundscapes. In performance, the song’s ancient melodies are brought in confrontation with contemporary textures and atmospheres, and is complemented by dance moves that are a meeting of old and new styles.
The musical ensemble includes Norwegian musician Tuva Syvertsen and Agnes’s son Per Anders Buen Gardås, and the dancers are from a youth group based in Bø, specialising in reviving and extending folk dance traditions.
Produced by Telemarkfestivalen and Riksscenen.
