Barbara Strozzi: L’eraclito amoroso (1651)

Vollen United

Kenneth Karlsson – piano/Indian Harmonium
Inga Grytås Byrkjeland – cello
Frederick Bock – theorbo

Little is known of the Renaissance composer and singer Barbara Strozzi apart from the prolific body of secular songs she left behind. Apparently a talent ahead of her time, rare in a male dominated field, Strozzi is a rare example of a female musical artist in the 17th century. This exquisite recital traces a red thread from Strozzi’s Venetian world to our own, highlighting the continuing fascination of modern composers with the sonic texture and structure of the Baroque era.

Celebrating the 400th anniversary of Strozzi’s birth, Elizabeth Holmertz, Kenneth Karlsson and their Vollen United ensemble will perform a selection of Strozzi’s ‘brash and uncomfortable’ pieces as well as world premieres by Klaus Lang, Eivind Buene and Susanna, all in different ways inspired by Strozzi’s work.

Concert 2: Susanna & Dan Styffe
Laurence Crane: Song For Europe (2019)
Susanna: We Live On A Star (2014)
Susanna: Golden Nebula (2018)
Susanna: Earth Hymn (2019, WP)

Susanna – vocals and piano
Dan Styffe – double bass

In the second half, Susanna herself will present a duo performance with Dan Styffe of a new work by British composer Laurence Crane, as well as performing her own new piece Golden Nebula. Over multiple short movements, Song for Europe includes lists of European towns, quotes a short film by Beatrice Gibson and ranges over the continent’s many languages.
