Søppelsolen (The Trash Sun) by Norwegian poet Tor Ulven is the starting point for this new piece by Norwegian composer Jon Øivind Ness. The composer was familiar with the 1989 collection since reading it as a student and always had ambitions to set some of its verses to music. When he recently rediscovered it, he was bowled over by the power of its imagery and reconnected with his youthful enthusiasm.
Writing for the progressively-minded Norwegian Ensemble Ernst, and the vocalist Bård Bratlie, Ness has tried to encapsulate the qualities of Ulven’s poetry in a glowing soundscape of whispered intimations, outbursts of song and abstract sounds. Ulven, who committed suicide in 1995, was considered one of Norway’s leading poetic stylists and was heavily influenced by surrealist texts. Søppelsolen is a posthumous meeting of minds between two great Norwegian cultural figures.
