Betsy Jolas: Onze Lieder (1977)
Bent Sørensen: Second Symphony (2020)
Håkan Hardenberger – trumpet
In a year when travel has become almost impossible, this musical journey is the first of two 1 hour concerts with Oslo-Filharmonien at Ultima this year. It is centred on the works of Danish composer Bent Sørensen and will help you escape into imagination and dreams.
French composer Betsy Jolas’s Onze Lieder substitutes the trumpet for the human voice, and puts the full range of the instrument to the test against an orchestral backdrop. Tonight’s soloist is the acclaimed Swedish international horn star Håkon Hardenberger.
Opening with the sound of a scream, Bent Sørensen’s Second Symphony - commissioned by Oslo-Filharmonien and others - evolves through interactions with its echoes, passing through movements of tranquility and more violent encounters. Finally a ship emerges and disappears in a melancholy note of departure. As the composer comments: ’Maybe this is my farewell in music’.
