A double concert of adventurous new sounds that demonstrates how far young musicians are stretching the idea of improvised music.
As a duo, guitarist Jo David Meyer Lysne and bassist Mats Eilertsen follow a line from the ambient minimalism of Brian Eno and Terry Riley. On their new album on Hubro, Kroksjo, the duo shape meditative, poetic evocations of mood and place, with ecstatic, shimmering acoustic guitar and pedal steel and Eilertsen’s acclaimed jazz bass. Attaching tape to vinyl pressings of their previous recordings, they combine glitchy textures to their live input, always keeping the Norwegian landscapes they love at the front of their imagination.
Smerz (Catharina Stoltenberg and Henriette Motzfeldt) have developed a hypnotic, intriguing sound with an emotional honesty that is equal parts minimalist and brutal. Their asymmetric dance music extracts essential elements of pop and R&B to deliver a captivating mix of sexy and sad, corny and rebellious. Smerz’ performance at this year’s Ultima Festival will consist of unreleased material and, for the first time, features musicians on cellos in an entrancing and unique stage setting.
