This year’s children’s day at Ultima invites children on an adventurous round of dreams, wishes, oceans, dancing, encounters with a rap queen and the spirits of grand opera.

Bring your kids to the edge of the sea in Oslo’s newly reshaped cultural quarter – with events in parallel at the brand new Deichman Bjørvika main library and the Opera house – for a whole afternoon of musical fun and discovery. Between 12 and 17 the library will be open for sound installations, workshops, dance performances and concerts.

Pick up an instrument and add your unique sound to Havlyd, a wonderful sonic depiction of the seabed. This audio-visual installation is a room decorated to represent an underwater world, and children will build up a bubbling soundscape throughout the day played back on a 20 channel sound system.

Outside, attach youthful dreams to a tree sculpture in Yoko Ono’s Wish Tree Garden installation, a collection of written wishes and hopes for the future the Japanese artist has collected around the planet.

DRØM is a dance performance (excerpt), with music and light for children from 4 years. Created by ICB Produksjoner, it delves into the strange, funny and absurd pictures and stories that come into our heads while we are sleeping.

Fifth-year pupils at Høvik school have composed music and sent it in to Veslefrikk, a national junior music composition competition arranged by the Skapia organisation.
The children have been working with Parallax ensemble and rap vocalist Maria Karlsen (Lotus, Awesomnia) to create a 30 minute closing concert for BUD. Working with the children, the musicians will interpret 12 different short pieces with themes ranging from climate to outer space and animals.

Meanwhile, drop in to the Opera to hear a goodie-bag of vocal projects calculated to delight young children. Extracts from Ultima’s Opera for Babies project – featuring mini-operas by Christina Lindgren and Eivind Buene – will be running three times during the afternoon.

In Dreams Of Our Future, composer and vocalist Sofia Jernberg (Fire! Orchestra, Paavo) pours a succession of dreams, written down by Oslo’s children, into lyrics. The children themselves will sing these songs together as a choir, accompanied by music from a who’s who of the Scandinavian improvisation scene in a staged setting.

Bird Party is a video work with Jernberg on vocals, in which New York based soprano Ariadne Greif and director of photography Caroline Mariko Stucky ponder everything that might be different in the future. In New York, the eerie quiet of lockdown brought explosions of birdsong that engulfed ambulance sirens. This piece aims to contrast the old with the new, decay with positive change, and people far apart trying to feel close.
