In his new audio-visual installation Testimonium, Danish artist Jacob Kirkegaard confronts the global challenge of how human waste and pollution are treated. Using recordings and video of refuse and wastewater facilities in Denmark and Latvia, as well as the Dandora Dump Site in Nairobi, Kenya (one of the world’s largest dumping grounds), Kirkegaard’s piece traces the journeys, transformations and persistence of human waste. Projected on a large screen, Testimonium contrasts different disposal methods, from toxic black smoke clouds to recycling and purification projects.

Via vibration sensors inside piles of trash and huge incinerators, underwater microphones in polluted rivers and sewage basins, and mics picking up windswept soundscapes of burning plastic, and hand-sorted streams of glass, tin and plastic, Kirkegaard builds a vivid testimony, looking back at our planet from an imaginary future.
