What is the signature sound of Oslo? In this Electrical Walks Oslo, German sound artists Christina Kubisch brings her long running sound walk series to Oslo for the first time. The audience is invited to walk the city streets on a special tour designed by Kubisch, following a map of Oslo’s electromagnetic highlights, wearing custom made headphones constructed to pick up the secret electromagnetic fields live around the city. Sources such as fluorescent lighting, wi-fi, radar systems, anti-theft security devices, surveillance cameras, mobile phones, tram cables, antennae, navigation systems, minibanks and neon advertising create electrical fields, each with their own sounds that are often unexpectedly musical. As Kubisch’s work has revealed, each city has its own unique electromagnetic soundscape.

Christina Kubisch is one of Europe’s leading sound artists. Active since the 1970s, the German artist’s work scans the electromagnetic frequency range to reveal hidden patterns of technology, data flows and the secret rhythms of human civilisation.

Electrical Walks Oslo will be available for the duration of Ultima, beginning on 13 September. Headphones and the map can be collected and returned at the Sentralen reception on the Ground Floor any time during opening hours. The walk lasts about an hour.
