The polar regions supply some of the planet’s most stunning landscapes, as well as the most startling images of climate crisis. Opening Ultima 2019 at Oslo’s Konserthuset, Lasse Thoresen’s monumental 80 minute multimedia orchestral work Lyden av Arktis (The Sound of the Arctic), written specifically for the Arktisk Filharmoni (Arctic Philharharmonic), is inspired by his travels around the white-out landscapes of Svalbard and Finnmark, and incorporates stunning videos and photos from the Arctic by Norwegian photo artist Trym Ivar Bergsmo.

Featuring immersive projections as well as the massed forces of the Arktisk Filharmoni, Lyden av Arktis is a powerful evocation of a part of the world that has until now been relatively undisturbed, and is full of its own histories and myths. On the journey you’ll hear integrated local psalms and Sami joiks, babbling brooks and birdsong, calving glaciers and a devastating finale. The piece expresses all the extremes of beauty and danger to be found in the weather and terrain of this white wilderness.

Produced in collaboration with Arktisk Filharmoni.
In collaboration with Norsk Komponistforening and Oslo europeisk miljøhovedstad 2019.
